Meet the van
Say hello to Harriet
Harriet joined us in 2026 with barely 2,800km on the clock, so she is about as close to a new van as a hire camper gets. She is a 2024 Toyota Hiace converted to a high roof, which means you can stand up inside to cook, get changed and move about.
The big thing is the gearbox. She is a six-speed automatic, so if you have never driven a manual, or you simply do not want to on holiday, Harriet takes that worry away completely. Apple CarPlay handles your maps and playlists, and the reversing cameras make tight campsites and car parks straightforward.
At night the two bench seats and the fold-away table turn into a double bed. By day that same space is where you eat breakfast, play cards and plan tomorrow's drive.

Ferry tip. At 4.69 m Harriet sits in the smallest length band for Interislander and Bluebridge sailings, which both start under 5.5 m. Longer vans move up a band and cost more to put on the boat.

What Harriet does not have. She is the simpler of our two vans. There is no microwave, coffee machine, freezer, TV, stereo or air conditioning on board, and no towbar or bike rack. If you want all of that, Harry has it. What Harriet gives you instead is an automatic gearbox and a near new van.

Where to take her
An easy South Island loop
Pick Harriet up in Christchurch and loop the South Island over a week or two: Lake Tekapo and the Dark Sky Reserve, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wanaka, the glaciers and the wild West Coast, then home over Arthur's Pass. With the automatic gearbox the alpine passes are genuinely relaxing, which is exactly the point.

No surprises
Good to know before you book Harriet
- Minimum driver age 25, with a full NZ or international licence.
- 7-night minimum hire.
- Pickup and drop-off in Christchurch, 9am to 5pm. Delivery is available.
- No smoking inside, and no pets.
- No frying or cooking with spices inside the van.
- No off-road driving, and no extended unsealed roads over 7km.
- 200km per day is included, then $0.75 per kilometre.
- Return with a full tank. Petrol, about 10.8L per 100km.
- Happiest at powered campsites. The solar is sized for the fridge, lights and charging, not appliances.
- Flying in? We will store your suitcases while you are away.
Cancellation policy. Harriet is on Camplify's strict policy. Cancel more than 45 days before your trip for a full credit, between 20 and 45 days for a 90% credit, and inside 20 days there is no credit or refund. Harry is on a more flexible policy if that matters to you.
